Russian fencer wins Moscow Sabre tournament

 

For the first time Russian fencer Sofya Velikaya managed to dominate the annual Moscow Sabre tournament, beating American Mariel Zagunis in the women’s final.

Eighty six athletes from twenty countries took part in the annual Moscow Sabre tournament.

On Sunday, Sofya Velikaya of Russia defeated the two-time Olympic champion Mariel Zagunis of the US in the women’s final.

Velikaya secured an overall victory of 15 points to 11 to record her first top podium finish here, having previously collected three silvers and two bronze medals.

Speaking after the awards ceremony, the two-times world champion said she gave everything for victory.

“I am very happy. I’ve been taking part in this tournament since 2003 and I've never won it. But today I finally did. I gave everything to this victory and I am very delighted. Today is also the last day of a competitive period and finally I can take a two-week rest.”
